Tips for celebrating student birthdays in French class

Celebrating your student’s birthdays at school can be a fun way to help your students feel special and recognize their special talents and gifts. However, it is important to consider things like cost, school food policies, displays and your student’s own wishes. Read below for some helpful tips and things to consider when planning student birthday celebrations.

Making a plan

First, check to see if your school already has a policy regarding student’s birthdays. Next, you should consider how you feel about student parents sending in treats, or students passing out invitations to parties in class. Whatever you decide, be sure to keep it simple and let your students and their families know your wishes at the start of the year.

Important considerations

Keep in mind that not all students and their families celebrate birthdays or wish to. Be sure to ask your students. If you have a student who doesn’t celebrate or does not wish to celebrate at school, you will want to ensure that you respect this.

Keeping track of birthdays

To keep track of student birthdays, be sure to keep a list in your teacher binder, add them to you monthly calendar or your digital calendar and set reminders.

Students love to see their names on the wall. Consider creating a classroom display that includes each month and the student’s birthdays that month. I really like this French birthday bulletin board display set by Mme. Caroline.

Ideas for birthday gifts and special privileges

-Make a birthday book bag. Use a fabric drawstring bag and fill with some birthday-themed French books for the birthday student to take home for the evening and enjoy.

-Add these sweet flags and pencil toppers to crazy straws, pixie sticks, glow sticks, fun pencils or pens for the perfect gift for your students!

-Allow the birthday child to sit in a special chair or the teacher’s desk for the day.

-Have your students create a ‘birthday book’ to make the birthday child feel special.  Use a template like this French printable birthday book for an easy gift from the whole class.

-Give the student a no homework pass for the night!

-If the student wishes, sing a French Happy Birthday song (see below for 4 versions to try!)
